The 2005 image was taken April 20th, 1987 from New Germany State Park, Garrett County, MD. Common on the Appalachan Plateau, rare in the Valley and Ridge, and absent eastward. Gar. and Wash. Counties. April 4th to April 27th. Caterpillar on hemlock. The ground color of this lovely moth ranges from bright green through brown to black, with all color forms overlain with the same intricate pale and dark pattern of lines and spots. Upon death, the green fades rapidly to cream.
